Cant connect to one computer
Posted by Gogs on March 7th, 2006

Remote desktop connection will not connect to one PC - but it used to work.
I cant connect to a computer even on the LAN! I have tried disableing the XP
(SP2)firewall but still no difference. I installed IIS to try and enable
remote desktop web connection but i dont think this has changed anything.
I have checked that Remote desktop is still enabled.Any ideas?

do a simple test. Can you telnet the port 3389 for example telnet x.x.x.x 3389 (here the x.x.x.x the remote IP).

If you changed the port to something other than the default TCP Port 3389
then you need to reboot the PC after making the change in the registry. Did
you do that if you changed the port back to 3389?

Any chance your running MS OneCare Live Beta or NAV 200X worm protection or
any Symantec product?

Hi,
This computer had just been reloaded with XP pro last week and all updates
applied. Sophos anti virus running and Microsoft Antispyware beta.
Port for Remote Desktop Port was changed to 4001 at this time and tested.
all worked internally (on the LAN) but due to a problem with the router it
would not work on the WAN. Router has now been swapped and the PC was
accessable whilst testing but later that day it stopped. Now the remote
desktop won't work on the LAN or WAN.
It may be some thing to do with trying in vain to get Remote Desktop Web
Connection to work that has stopped the remote desktop. but I am absolutely
sure it is not virus / spyware related.

Regards,
Gordon

Check the event logs. If it does not work over the local LAN then you have
issues on the PC itself... Revivify the port number in the registry.
