Roaming profile not working for VPN clients
Posted by postings@alexshirley.com on October 4th, 2005

Hi

I'm running a Windows XP PC PRO SP2 via VPN (ADLS) using SBS 2003
server.

The VPN is working fine, I logon using the dial up VPN connection" from
the initial login screen and everything works fine.

However I cannot download my roaming profile (our network has this as
standard). Note I have disabled slow link detection in group policy.

Does anybody have any ideas on how I can get roaming profiles to work
on a VPN connection?

Many thanks

Alex

Unless you have eliminated many things from the roaming profile - I cannot
see that you would want to.

Favorites, cookies, desktop, My Documents, etc.. The amount of data a user
could have (or sheer number of files) would cause someone with normal
DSL/Cable connections to be connected for LONG periods of time before they
could even use their computer. Map drives - allow the users to access their
data this way.

What error are you getting or does it just not download the profile? I can
see why it wouldn't if you have not slimmed down the roaming profiles...

Hi Shenan

Thanks for your reply Shenan.

Yes I am aware of the speed implications when logging on with roaming
profiles.

On VPN it just uses a profile on the local computer. There are no error
messages. Everything behaves as it should, I just can't download my
roaming profile when using a VPN remote machine.

My profile will download fine on any machine on our local network (not
using VPN technology of course).

Cheers

Alex
