- Xenix :"Missing operating system" - HELP!!!!
- Posted by Mirek on February 16th, 2004
Welcome!
I have Sco Xenix installed on HDD ST3123A (107MB) [Intel 386DX, 8MB
RAM]. A few days ago I've seen message "Missing operating system". So,
now I can't run Xenix and I can't recover/backup my VERY importent
data from "Xenix-root" partition. I was trying to mount the xenix
partition under Linux Mandrake 8.0 - <mount -t sysv /dev/hdc4
/mnt/...> it's not working - "... bad superblock or to many file
systems ...".
The structure of my HDD: C: Part. 1. DOS-16 - FAT 20MB
Part. 2. Xenix - Sco Xenix 82MB (Active)
Disk Edit shows:
System Boot Start: Side Cyli Sec End: Side Cylin Sec. Rel.sect.
Num.ofsec.
DOS-16 no 1 0 1 0 200 1 17 40987
unused no 0
unused no 0
XENIX Yes 0 201 1 0 1023 1 41004 167892
Booting form DOS partition is OK (DOS-16: Boot - YES) . I really want
to fix Xenix booting or Backup my data from Xenix partition.
PLEASE Help!
Best regard

As far as I know Linux cannot read Xenix file system, you might be
dealing with a bad boot sector, what I would do is to install Xenix on
a different disk and try to mount this one on it and get the data out,
just remember there is a good chance to recover the data as long as it
is handled correctly.

Well, I am not sure if it is a MBR (Master Boot Record, I think it is
a boot sector which Xenix is using to boot off, I didn't have much
luck fixing that in the past, anyway, do you have another disk and
Xenix OS media disks and serial/activation, if so install Xenix on a
different disk and mount this one and get your important data out
before fixing anything, I would be more concern about data than
disk/OS.
